A Moment of Weakness by Karen Kingsbury

It has been a long time since I have read a fiction book for review. And I gotta tell ya I was so happy to have accepted A Moment of Weakness for review! Reading this book I immediately fell into the storyline. I found myself allowing an hour to read and then spent many hours in a comfy chair on my back porch. I hated to put this book down and I was sad for it to end!

Jade Connor was cool. Just a downright strong women with a heart of gold. She was a victim of many sad people's ignorance. Without being a spoiler, I did shake my fist a few times and ask "Why Jade? Why did you do it?" I just felt she led with her emotions too often and it made me frustrated. But I loved her because I saw me in her - the person who does not give up and always looks for the good in others. And I was happy to know her faith journey led her far.

In trying to find a fault in this book, I came up short. I could not find a single detail, errror or inconsistency. I only share that because in reading an entire book, there is always one picayune detail I come up with which I feel the need to share.

I realized in reading A Moment of Weakness that I need to read more Karen Kingsbury books! Her writing style is so fresh and to the point. I like that the details are not over emphasized or "wordy". She writes with crisp sentences and I do believe this is what makes me so easily get drawn into the story. I feel like Jade and Tanner are my friends. For the one week it took me to finish this book, I felt their presence as I thought often of them and what would happen in their world.

I cried, laughed and just thoroughly enjoyed A Moment of Weakness. I need to do more of this type of reading. These types of books are like a spa day for your soul. Reading truly does take you places can never go. I want to be in  Jade and Tanner's world forever.....

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

Rarely (if ever) do I get excited to find a Christian fiction book which I can't wait to devour. Redeeming Love was like finding an old friend. I had read this anointed work by Francine Rivers about 15 years ago when I first became a Christian. I was sorry to have lent it out and not gotten it back. So naturally, I jumped at the chance when I saw Multnomah had offered Redeeming Love in their Blogging For Books program. I was pleased to receive a print copy to read and enjoy all over again.

This book was a Twentieth-Anniversary edition complete with a Study Guide, which is why I also recommended this book for a Women's Bible Study as well as a personal growth tool for anyone who "is hurting and hungry." I quoted those words because Ms. Rivers dedicated this book "To those who hurt and hunger."

Scripture and people of note throughout history were mentioned at the beginning of each chapter. The storyline was so intriguing and paralleled the story of Hosea in the Bible. Without spoiling by sharing too many details, I recommend each reader to first read the Book of Hosea in the Bible in order to lay the groundwork for this book.

Since I have read the entire Lineage of Grace series (historical fiction) by Francine Rivers, I have come to appreciate her ability to stick close to a storyline in which a Christian Bible-reading woman could relate to in the Bible. The fiction aspect of Redeeming Love to me was merely in the names of the main characters as well as the era in which the story took place.

I will always stand in long lines and wait in the rain to receive a book by Francine Rivers. Thanks to Waterbrook Multnomah I didn't have to do either to receive Redeeming Love. I was truly blessed to once again have and then to review such a wonderful book. It will be a part of my personal library now. I recommend this book to women everywhere! Get your copy today.

As Silver Refined: Answers to Life's Disappointments by Kay Arthur

Ahhhhnointed!!! This book was truly a vacation for my soul. I found myself taking deep breaths as I discovered many "Aha!" moments.

I enjoyed this Holy Spirit inspired book from cover to cover. The takeaway was the reminder of Romans 8:28 and the fact that though God may test us, He does not tempt us as Satan does. This testing is Biblical and so essential for our growth as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Perfectly appointed to me during a challenging month, I gleaned from so many examples and situations in which the author Kay Arthur shared her experiences learning to have the mind of Christ. I love how ms. Arthur introduced people who wrote books about their challenges. I plan to research Harlan Popov's story, Marie Monsen in her book A Wall of Fire, as well as Bruce Olson's testimony as told in his book Bruchko

Chock full of Scripture, As Silver Refined constantly led me back to Jesus and God's Plan of Salvation. She appealed to me as a believer, but also to the nonbeliever to make a decision to follow Christ.  I appreciated her clarifying the two with a comment that she understood the believer reading that chapter already understood the premise, however, her comment was a reminder or an encouragement. I appreciated her inclusion of me and her kindness in wanting me to keep reading.  This type of personal touch is one an experienced author, teacher and Titus woman would include.

This book would be wonderful for a group Bible study. The Study Guide in the back of the book is lengthy and full of excellent questions to dig into as well as Scripture review from the heart of the book.

As Silver Refined is a must read for anyone who is serious about digging deeper into Scripture and becoming more aware of how to avoid the common pitfalls of life's disappointments (which she referred to as the Deadly D's). This truly was an anointed read which I devoured and truly enjoyed!

Love Food & Live Well by Chantel Hobbs

Subtitled Lose Weight, Get Fit & Taste Life at Its Very Best, this hardback gem reminded me that food is not the enemy! Our struggle is in understanding and abiding by moderation and focus on our Creator, God for discipline in our lifestyles.
Author Chantel Hobbs included Biblical accounts of people just like us, who struggled with their humanity. She offered hope and healing throughout the pages of this book. She had an inspiring, yet tough-as-nails attitude about meal preparation.

Her authority came first from God, then her knowledge of health, and then from her successful account of losing weight and keeping it off. Her dedication For the lost was special and relatable. And please do not skip to Chapter One but read the Introduction. Eye opening.I appreciated reading of the science behind the formula. I learned how to calculate my Basal Metabolic Rate and to use it as a starting point. Cheered as she mentioned about building lean muscle and making building lean muscle a priority. I am currently attempting to do this in a healthy way. I learned so much about calorie intake, and the balance of exercise and diet.

I plan on trying out her recipes as well as dusting off my big exercise ball and weights. The photos of her exercising were quite helpful and inspiring too. I needed a jump start to get my diet and exercise plan revved up before Jan 1 rolls around. I didn't need to wait until the New Year to make a resolution to eat better and lose a few pounds. Chantel Hobbs has inspired me to Love Food & Live Well! We only have one life. We need to make the most of it.

Gotta go. Got too much energy to sit here and type. My sneakers are screaming my name. Thanks Chantel, for a wonderful resource chock-full of ideas and positive points for living my life well!

Decision Points by George W. Bush

This book was written in first person by George Bush. The tone was conversational and down-to-earth. I almost felt as if Mr. Bush were sitting beside me sharing the ups and downs, the true accounts and the not-so-favorite memories and challenges he experienced both privately as well as publicly.
His memoir included color photos in the center of the book (loved

that personal touch). There are also random shots of other times and places. Although sad times were discussed (Katrina, 911, start of war with Iraq), the photos were mostly upbeat and showed a softer side of the President.

Evident was his love for the Lord, his wife and country. I have always respected and enjoyed learning about this man and what he went through during his presidency. Actually, it was my very first time ever voting and I voted for him. Reading Decision Points brought back so many memories from my first experiences with politics. I was drawn to politics as a result of witnessing this man share his "easy speak" with the nation.
After reading the chapter on Katrina I understood more so what had happened behind the scenes. I better understood the role the government had (both federal and local) during that horrible time when so many needed help and just waited for someone to come to their aid. I appreciated hearing from the President first-hand the process and his frustration.

A memoir such as this I will treasure always. Timing is everything and the timing on Mr. Bush's memoir coming out was to me, perfect. We are a country right now that needs hope. I have the hope that one day our country will once more have a president with Biblical values, belief in this nation's ability to persevere, and the success of our superpower status.

Was George Bush perfect? No. Not by any means. And one takeaway I got from this book is that he never claimed to have all the answers. But I can imagine hearing his voice now after reading Decision Points as he points to the sky and says something like, "I don't and never did have all the answers. But I know someone who did. And that makes every de
cision easier to make."

I can imagine him saying that because George Bush is just a man that had a very big role in our history. He served well. We served humbly. He did his very best. And I am grateful to have gleaned from his life and experiences as shared in Decision Points.

You Were Born for This by Bruce Wilkinson

Having read Bruce Wilkinson's mega bestselling Prayer of Jabez and Secrets of The Vine, I anticipated a book which would inspire and intrigue from beginning to end. I was not disappointed!

Right away, the stories about people who put these principles into practice and connected with others to deliver God's love to those God directed them to helped me understand the mission of You Were Born for This. The mission upheld the fact that God wants all of His children to deliver miracles to others and to remind them of His love and desire to have a personal relationship with all of humanity.

We can be His delivery agents as long as we are willing to be the hands and feet to do the work. Subtitled 7 Keys to a Life of Predictable Miracles, this book was delivered in a How To format. My only objection in this entire book was that at times it did feel a bit "methodical" as if God would need His people to approach His Word in a certain way. I know the author did not intend to replace God's directions but some sections could have been left out or abbreviated. One example of this critique was a sort of "infomercial" about the author and his previous books.

This book was an exhortation to live your life as never before. Page 15, "You Were Born For This is a bold initiative to reclaim the miraculous as normal way of life. Through biblical insights, true stories, and practical  how-tos, I'll show you what that new normal could look like for you."

It was written to the born again believer who already has a desire to serve God and be a part of an exciting journey to help others see God. It would be difficult to get through this book if you did not already have a passion for Christ and His Word.

So many great stories which I liken to parables. The stories stuck with me especially the story on page 20 about easter eggs! My all time favorite quote which I will never forget was found on page 102 in the section entitled Getting to the root of fear. I quote, "All of us feel fear when we are about to do something that involves considerable risk. Risk, after all, means there's no guarantee of success. And usually when we feel fear, we don't  proceed. But fear is a fruit, not the root. The root is unbelief in our hearts.  That's why the greatest obstacle to a life marked by miracles is not fear but unbelief."

Yikes. I enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end. I feel I am better prepared to go into all the world and make fishers of men. I am reminded to pray daily to be available and always ask, "What can I do for you?" Then wait for God to do the work!

Secrets of the Vine for Women by Darlene Marie Wilkinson

Having had read and enjoyed Bruce Wilkinson's Secrets of the Vine, I ordered this book to review wondering, "Why write this book?" I doubted this book for women could top the amazing Spirit-led book by Bruce Wilkinson.

Shortly into the book, the answer was clear. Secrets of the Vine for Women introduced a woman's perspective on John 15. The author (and wife of Bruce Wilkinson) Darlene Marie explained why she wrote this book.

Secrets of the Vine was more widely read by women than men. Bruce Wilkinson received many letters and comments from women about how the book changed the their lives that Darlene Marie decided to write this book to address many of the comments.

The purpose of this book as in the original is to experience greater fruitfulness in your life. God disciplines those He loves - those who are His (Romans 10:9-11). Using John 15 and relating that Scripture to our lives is such a powerful key to open the door to abundance in our lives.

A story of a daughter and her father was weaved throughout the book. The story was so helpful in not only understanding the complexity of running a vineyard but it was symbolic of the care and love our heavenly Father give to us.

There were so many nuggets in this petite book. I quote (page 26), "Too many women I know think of singing in the choir or teaching a Sunday school class as the real good works, and the ordinary tasks of serving others throughout the day as somehow less significant. Even the disciples had that problem." We then read the account in Mark 14:3-9 when Mary anointed Jesus with oil that the disciples thought should be used to sell and give to charity.

Page 43, "Sadly, Christians you and I know are suffering every day unnecessarily because they have not heard or acted on the truth of God's discipline. They misinterpret unwanted circumstances and emotions as random events when they are actually God's efforts to set them free from sin and bring them back to fruitfulness."

Before reviewing this book, I doubted I would enjoy this book more than the first. I enjoyed this book just as much but in a different way. This book was quite personal. The author's warm and encouraging story telling was a true blessing. I did not want to put the book down as I felt as if I were sharing a cup of coffee with a friend or wise mentor. I felt as if I were in a retreat. This book is a spa for the soul!

When The Hurt Runs Deep by Kay Arthur

Chapter One presented various situations in which people find themselves exclaiming, "It wasn't supposed to be this way!" Ms. Arthur shared an article she read in Vanity Fair which was about the family of Bernie Madoff. This story caused me pause and reminded me that we often never know the depths of despair many go through as a result of sin and the consequences of sin. Many generations may go through agonizing pain as a result of one person's decisions. A sobering reminder that we must never make choices without God!

Chapter Two ushered in hope with the title "You Don't Suffer Alone." The story of Joseph reminded me that God has a purpose for everything. Encouragement leaped off of each page and I ended the chapter wanting more and wanting to do more to thank God for my current adversities.

Each chapter thereafter was a soothing balm for the suffering soul. Chapter Three "Is There Purpose In Your Pain?" cemented the biblical truths of the previous chapter. I enjoyed the challenges the author presented.  Page 16, "Maybe you can relate to this portion of Joseph's story. Put the book down and think about it, maybe taking a minute to write out your thoughts in the margin. In the next chapter we'll get to the fundamental truth that unlocks the door to hurt, enabling you to (finally) heal."

Genesis 41-50 was discussed and the author reminded the reader often that God is in control and there is a reason for everything. God's omnipresence was discussed in depth, thus allowing a sensitive ministering to a hurting person who feels alone. Ms. Arthur does not minimize the pain on endures, but pointed the reader back to God in each and every example.

In the Appendix A "Few Practical Helps" was offered. In so many ways this book was relative to modern culture but came from a Christian worldview. The author came alongside her reader understanding but not enabling the reader to stay in a "pity party." The love and leading to God combined with her down-to-earth writing style was so effective in keeping me turning the pages. I did not want to put the book down and I came away from this book feeling hopeful, and more effectively able to help others who are hurting.

When the Hurt Runs Deep is for everyone who seeks healing and hope for those desperate moments in life - - that we all face. Hopefully after reading this book, the reader will realize they do not need to face those moments alone. God is there for them to walk them through the fire, into the rain and to remind others that they do not have to face adversity alone.

God Gave Us The World By Lisa Tawn Bergren art by Laura J. Bryant

Oh my! The beautiful artwork with it's pastels and beautiful purple skies was a blessed sight to behold. I enjoyed reading the story which was about how we are all different. Mama Bear was teaching her cubs that though there are many bears these bears live in different places and enjoy different things - though they are all bears. The story does give God credit for the world - as Mama Bear shares that God created the world.
My absolute favorite pages were halfway through the book (the book is not paginated). A cub asks, "Why not make us all the same?""We're not all the same on the inside, are we? The answer with beautiful illustrations and fonts typified in the adjective perfectly exude joy and childlike fun. The explanation is this: Some of us are quiet, others LOUD! Some of us like to move fast, and others take their t-i-m-e. I think it's fun that God made us all bears, but all special too." Super cute drawings.

On a less positive note, I did have a few questions regarding storyline. There was mention of Grandpa, Grandma and Mama Bear. However, there was not a single mention of a Papa Bear though there was a bear wearing a pink striped scarf that seemed to straggle behind the lead bear who was clearly Mama Bear.

Since this book was marketed for the Christian market, I was disappointed by the fact that there was no Scripture references to be found as well as no reference to Christianity - just to God, which many religions and cultures worship a god of some sort. It would have been refreshing to hear Scripture from Genesis, telling of Creation. Some may feel this is nit picking at a beautifully illustrated child's book. However, this book could very well have been marketed in the secular market and do very well if the author left the word God in. Not that I am advocating that, however, as a reviewer of Christian books, I was disappointed that there was no mention of Jesus or Scripture.

Lastly, the back of the book caught my eye. I quote, "This adorable story offers young children who are discovering their place in God's big world an opportunity to learn about the wonder of diversity, the gift of creativity, the importance of caring for His gifts, and how each child - each creation- is special to God."

Sounds quite admirable. However, the word 'diversity' is what caught my eye. The word diversity as defined below is not the correct word in my opinion in a book about nature, animals and plant species. Diversity solely applies to humans. Biodiversity would have been the correct choice.

Human diversity: The biological, psychological, social, and cultural differences among people that affect the way their needs are expressed and satisfied.
Biodiversity: –noun, diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment.

As Christians, we seek unity. Why would we celebrate our difference as we all know we are made in God's image. Yes, we are all parts of one Body but we are all seeking the same God of the Bible and living according to His Word. And yes, we are all God's creation, but we are not all His children. And so to encourage diversity among God's people really is not biblical.

I did not look up the author's other books so it may be wise before a parent purchases one of Ms. Bergren's books to review her other books. If the traditional family is upheld and celebrated among the bear family then I would suggest reading with your children as a launching pad for deeper Scripture study on Creation, how special and unique and truly loved by God each child is, as well as how wonderfully amazing God's Creation is.

This book did give me the adult reader a blessing with the beautiful artwork. It did attempt to create a framework for dialogue about God. It just fell far short for me as a born again Christian who saw a teaching opportunity fail because the author didn't go full bore into Christianity with her audience. There may have been a mixed message. Buyer beware.

The Goodness of God by Randy Alcorn

This petite book began on a wonderfully comforting note with this quote by Paul Scherer which I found just after the Contents Section. I quote, "I know the things that happen: the loss and the loneliness and the pain...But there's a mark on it now: as if Someone who knew that way Himself, because He had travelled it, had gone on before and left His sign; and all of it begins to make a little sense at last-gathered up, laughter and tears, into the life of God, with His arms around it!"

Yes! I deeply breathed in the sweet perfume of Jesus in the very first pages of Mr. Alcorn's book. But the lovefest does not end there. On page five I enjoyed the section entitled, "When Losing Faith is Good." Here's a taste, "Evil and suffering have a way of exposing our inadequate theology. When affliction comes, a weak or nominal Christian often discovers that his faith doesn't account for it or prepare him for it. His faith has been in his church, denomination, or family tradition, or in his own religious ideas - but not in Christ. As he faces evil and suffering, he may, in fact, lose his faith."

Ouch. Preach it brother!! On page 31 Mr. Alcorn again nails the Truth with his discussion of secondary doctrinal issues. He states, "I don't believe in picking fights about secondary doctrinal issues. But I'm convinced there's a great deal at stake in this issue of open theism, as it attempts to redefine the very nature of God. Fortunately, God will always remain who he is. The question is, as we try to modify him to resolve our intellectual struggles, what will become of us?"

Chapter Five entitled The Great Drama was my favorite chapter. This chapter focused on "Reviewing the Roles of Evil and Suffering in Christ's Redemptive Work." Page 45 quotes 2 Chronicles 36:15-16 (NIV) which states, "But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy."

I loved hearing Mr. Alcorn speak of Jesus as well as his childhood. I appreciated Mr. Alcorn's weaving of Aslan from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe into this chapter. This example was used to remind the reader that though Jesus leaving earth was sad, as Aslan depicted also in the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there was hope and victory because this was not the end of the story!!

Chapter Five helps us to understand what we are going through right now. As this world becomes more evil and we become persecuted for our faith we learn to stand firm on God's Word. Page 47 entitled "Last Word" was a shot in the arm for all Christians who understand what Jesus did on the Cross for them. Everyone should read this story about the baby who almost got burned and the mother who did get burned saving her. We see not only goodness but gratitude in this account. Amazing writing!

There is so much I could share about this petite book by Mr. Alcorn. I know it would be perfect for anyone suffering or knowing of someone else suffering. This book was a great reminder how God does not change and is always perfect and good and loving toward all of us (John 3:16).

Yes, this may be a petite book but it is a powerfully packed book which can be given as a gift or kept to remind the reader of just how truly Good God is...

Blind Hope By Kim Meeder and Laurie Sacher

For a sneak peek click here.

I couldn't wait to receive Blind Hope so I could slip into the world of animal rescue and those who were blessed by the experience. I was not disappointed by the rescue story. I cringed at the conditions in which this dog was living, as well as the initial outcome of the vet consultation.

I cheered as this precious dog began to trust its owner and I enjoyed hearing about her learning curve in responding to her master's voice. I was educated on a dog needing insulin vaccines (I had never heard of that before).

My favorite chapter was The Closet starting on page 157. I very much relate to a dying dog and the grief associated with your beloved dog's suffering as I have laid to rest my own precious 19-year + seven-month-old Karamel a few years back. That chapter was written so well and I felt like I was right there with Laurie. I cheered after as that story was the culmination of hope for the entire book.

Being a Bible-quoting Christian I appreciated the use of Scripture laced throughout the book. I would however, have liked to see the Scripture references placed right alongside the Scripture instead of being footnoted in a notes section in the back. Just my preference, but it did seem odd that the references would be separately annotated. Kudos, however, to Ms. Meeder for including Scripture throughout as well as including the Salvation Message in the Epilogue.

After reading the Epilogue I realized the relationship between Kim and Laurie was friends above all other connections. I would have liked to have read that before reading the book, as I was reading that 'Mama K' was not just a mentor or mother figure, but a sounding board, a boss, a work-out partner and a sister in Christ. Above all, I read at the end that Kim was a friend. That made sense after reading the Epilogue.

Knowing Kim Meeder is the author and established writer, I understood the story being told in Kim's voice. However, at times I would have liked to hear more about particular situations in Laurie's voice or point of view not just merely told from Kim's perspective of what Laurie is experiencing. For example, many instances of learning how Laurie struggled and how she related her struggles to Mia's (her dog's) perspective allowed me as the reader to relate and to allow God in to address my own issues whether pride, fear, materialism, fake living, etc. I related.

Many examples of particular situations in which Laurie struggled were given but if there were less broad examples were given and more personal detail-oriented situations were given, I believe more situations may have "stuck" with me  (i.e., like the closet situation, where Laurie actually curled up in the closet next to Mia in a physical act of love and how she cried and grieved that night and was exhausted the next day). I would have better been able to connect with Laurie's struggles though still told through Kim's "voice."

Blind Hope was a wonderfully inspiring story of hope, love of God and love of His creatures as well as a story of true friendship and sisterhood. I wish I had a friend like Kim or Laurie! Having a friend to walk through life's struggles is a true blessing. And having a dog like Mia is a blessing only God could provide!

Thank you Kim Meeder for giving this reader Blind Hope - a story about an unwanted dog & the woman she rescued and so much more....

WATERBROOK MULTNOMAH BOOK REVIEW: Under the Overpass by Mike Yankoski

For a sneak peak and to download Chapter One, click here

I have to admit I was curious about this book - not just about learning more about the homeless - but about the heart of this man who chose to live among the homeless for five months! Would this man change his ideas about homelessness according to the Scriptures? Would his attitude about a hand-out versus a hand-up change his attitude about Christ's call to those in need?

I chose this book to review with an open mind and an open heart. I am happy to report I have gleaned much and have a new resolve after reading it - to be more mindful of Matthew 25:40 and Hebrews 13:3. Because I am a Christian I must be cunning as a serpent and wise as a dove. However, I must keep the "God appointments" and pray for those who attempt to slant me toward being a scoffer. It is crucial to recognize real needs versus manipulation in order to be effective in these last days.

As I often cheer for the "underdog", I was happy to read many stories of Mike and his travel mate Sam. He not only cheered for the underdog, but spent time listening and ministering - and then fed the person. Scripture was laced throughout. I appreciated the Biblical references and commitment to being "in the world but not of the world".

Page 36 hit me as the youth group allowed those in the facility to experience pure joy and be a "sight for sore eyes" representing life outside that place. This account was a reminder that it takes nothing for any of us to walk into a rescue mission, hospital or elderly facility and just be among the people. We don't realize the "fresh air" and the presence of the Lord that we bring. Those who witness us walk in and be salt and light take notice because their own darkness is often so far from vibrant living!

Page 38 in the second paragraph I had to stop and shout, "Amen!" It was an awakening to me to realize that the Pastors who often visit (or Chaplains who go into the prisons or even the visitors teaching Bible Studies in facilities in which they are ministering) often only focus on God's judgment, wrath, hell etc. miss the true opportunity to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Leaving out God's love and joy and he Creator of the Universe singing over them (Zephaniah 3:17) is tragic! This fact was further confirmed in that the author shared that many of the homeless they met already knew of God, the Bible and many claimed to be Christians. However, the men and women they met were failing to live in God's grace and under the power of the Holy Spirit - which is why any of us fail to begin with...

On page 122 a section entitled Wakeup Call challenged me to pursue my own faith in light of what God determines tp be my responsibility in regard to homelessness. I saw the man's point! On a personal note, where I live in upscale posh East Boca Raton, we have homeless camping at the end of our street (literally two houses down).

Homeless have been given "rights" according to Pottinger vs. Miami. Homeless in South Florida have actually reversed the notion of us ignoring them. Homeless in my town have formed a class of people whom you cannot discriminate against with jurisdictions backing their status. They have garnered the support of a very wealthy Miami lawyer who sees them as a protected class. Recently formed precedences no doubt later will become legislation.

The homeless are being "hired out" by the thugs to knock on our doors and case out our homes. There is a partnering of sorts!! So I had the reflex reaction to applaud that man in some sense because he was a hard working average Joe and just wanted to keep his environment clean. The park where they were sleeping was public and in my town the homeless would have had the right to stay there. Me yelling would have no effect. However, that gutteral instinct to protect my property kicked in. I know I must trust God to protect all that He has given me - I know I must pray harder and remember God is in control. I do believe fear guides us many times and that is what gets us in trouble!!

I cheered for Russ on page 142. Several instances I hung my head and sobbed as several churches and church people acted horribly toward these two "homeless" men. However, the "Russes" made up for those hypocritical and lax believers.

Just as I was wondering if they would try to get work (I did wonder how a ...say... McDonald's would treat an obvious homeless person if they applied for a job) they got the offer to work at the carnival. It did make me sad to realize the guy worked them to the bone literally for very little pay. Sad.

Page 212 voila! the question I had about how to discern who to give money to so as not to enable a homeless person. There was a man that was grateful to go with Mike to get a slice of pizza. There was another man that same day that Mike offered to go with and buy him dinner.

This is the account of the latter situation and I quote, "Not more than fifty feet from the pizza shop, I met a raggy, sun-weathered man stumbling along the sidewalk and singing. As I neared, he began yelling, "Give me a dollar!" He stumbled badly, righted himself with difficulty, then yelled, "I need a dollar for a beer before I go to sleep! Give me a dollar now!" I stopped. "I'm not going to give you any money, man." I told him. "Not for beer. But if you're hungry, we can get some dinner." "Yeah, whatever," he mumbled and staggered on his way."

(The man's response and Mike's comments stuck with me.) I quote, "The contrast between the two homeless men that evening highlighted for me one of the fundamental lessons I'd learned on the streets: We're responsible to help others toward hope in Jesus' name. But we're not responsible for their choices."

This explanation solidified my struggle with the modern day church. Sadly, we as individuals are left to battle and discern who is worthy and who is not worthy to receive our attention (acknowledging a homeless person with even just so much as a nod). The task is daunting! And this is why so many do nothing.

I so very much appreciated hearing about the transition back to "normal" life. I'm sorry folks - but I thought of Tom Hanks in Castaway sleeping on the floor the first night back in civilization- well - attempting to sleep...but I thought of Tom with all the food left (giant crab legs of all things!) and the remote controlling the electricity becoming a sad blinking streetlight to him suddenly (symbolic of many things - as later demonstrated in the later scene with many roads to take). He made the choice to pursue Helen Hunt one last time...

Back to the review ;)...I appreciated hearing about the "warm walls" and the way the author missed the aliveness of the outside environment. Simply intriguing the way the author allowed the reader into his head though the reader had never walked a day in his "dental-flossed" mended flip flops!!!

The writer in me cannot close this review without a few comments or suggestions. On page 7 a statistic is given however the reference is not cited. I would like to have that reference for my own usage to expound on in a blog or other outlet for the purpose of informing. I cannot use it if I do not have a footnote.. Page 46 I was a bit surprised to hear that the father had called yet the author stated that no cell phones were brought along. Did the father call on a Tract phone or a local payphone? That was an inconsistency. I would have liked to know how the father called knowing there were no cell phones brought on the trip.

Page 96 there was an argument for "we" that seemed out of character in this book. Since the author was the authority on the subject, coming from him in the first person would have been more relateable. My hackles rose starting with, "What do you do when a good tree bears bad fruit or a bad tree bears good fruit? Look harder." I would have rather heard what God had to say than the author as the author's verbiage here sounds emotional versus logical. Also on page 125 I would have liked to know who Richard White was as his quote was not referenced. Reason being, I have heard arguments that oppose the facts about mentally ill being the majority of homeless on our streets. As I am a Berean, I would have researched his quote further if I had information to do so.

Ironically on the last day that I read Under the Overpass, the "Sit Lie Law" in California, specifically Haight-Ashbury was highlighted on the morning news. The law voted to go in effect in January will seriously affect the homeless in that town. I was surprised of all days to see this news! I hope the town will not just banish these people but the churches will come alongside them and minister and aid them.

This amazing book reminded me that we as the Church of Jesus Christ must do better as a Body to love the unlovely. To stand on the Biblical verses that we have been preaching but not practicing. I gleaned so much from this book. I did not want it to end.

I read every word in the Epilogue and Q&A. I appreciated the author's last words on page 231, "Sometimes it's easy to walk by because we know we can't change someone's whole life in a single afternoon. But what we fail to realize is that simple kindness can go a long way toward encouraging someone who is stuck in a desolate place."

Have I come to a complete understanding and can fully agree that a born-again true Christian can be homeless? No. I still have questions about that. But just when I type that I remember that even Jesus Christ had nowhere to lay his head though the birds of the air had nests and the lilies of the field were taken care of - someone please email me those references! I have learned though from this amazing book that we must continue to ask our Creator what He wants us to individually do to love our neighbor which according to the Bible is "anyone we come in contact with".

If each of us individually searches to do something, and we bring this to calling to our churches, our churches can begin to address the homeless situation. We must love the sinner and hate the sin. We must listen more. Judge less. And make sacklunches - with fresh bread and fruit! We must realize that God meets our daily needs. He meets our needs so we can meet the needs of others and point them to Him.

As Mike Yankoski blessed me with his annointed book I hope to use what I have gleaned to be different, be bold and be the hands of feet of Christ. If I mend the soles of a worn out flip flop for Christ - He will supply the dental floss. He will provide the bandaid and Neosporin. I just have to go.

Thank you Mike and Sam for going - for sleeping Under the Overpass. Many lives will be changed by reading this book - and for the better - one underdog at a time can be fed and led - out of the Underpass into the Kingdom!
