Coming Back Stronger By Drew Brees

Coming Back Stronger is a memoir written by author and Moody Radio personality Chris Fabry. This account of Drew Brees truly had it all. Athlete, husband, father, a man professing faith in God, as well as star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. Page 14 seems to usher in the life change for Mr. Brees in which he realized he wanted to live for God. I quote, "As I sat there thinking about those deep, huge questions  that everyone faces at some point, the pastor, Dr. Browning Ware, was preaching about what God desires us to be. As an illustration in his message, he mentioned the movie A Few Good Men. He said that God is looking for a few good men to carry on his teachings and to walk the walk with Christ. That's when the lightbulb came on for me. He's talking to me. I want to be one of God's few good men."

And so begins this man's search to glorify God and inspire others in the process. He met Brittany in his 20s. They married and had son Baylen. I enjoyed the accounts of the baby being born as well as their struggles with his family and the trials they endured while he was injured. I also enjoyed the triumphs. I appreciated hearing his heart regarding being a husband.

Also interesting was the contrasting accounts of New Orleans vs. Miami and his decision-making process of whom to join. And shortly thereafter hearing about the devastation still in New Orleans years after Katrina. The color photos in the center of the book were quite nice.

However, I have a few criticisms directly related to the fact that this book though written about and by a true believer in Christ was a watered-down attempt at evangelism. Yes, there were many mentions of God, a few mentions of Christ, a half-hearted attempt at the salvation message on page 244 as well as a few biblical inaccuracies (specifically pages 90 and 192). I would not be so critical of this fact if this were a book aimed solely at the secular market with a slant toward morality or religion. However, Chris Fabry I hold accountable for these inaccuracies as well as many missed opportunities to actually include actual Scripture with references and explanations.

Because I review for the Christian market I was disappointed to know for example, that the author was referring to the Refiners Fire on page 90 but did not go deeper than the casual comments about our hearts (which are deceitful above all). Also, we cannot try to do anything apart from God but can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Lastly, a missed opportunity to reach the lost was in the admission of Mr. Brees that he is less outspoken that others might be. I was sad to hear this but my thoughts were confirmed that this book would do very well in the secular market as it was inspiring and not "preachy" at all.

I did enjoy the book and I am happy to know Mr. Brees truly did come back stronger. His story is amazing and inspirational. He is doing wonderful things for children with his Brees Dream Foundation. I would not buy this book for a born again believer but I would buy this book for a football fan or someone looking for a great ending to a tough beginning.

In my opinion, Coming Back Stronger would have deserved five stars if it had been solely marketed as a secular work.

Independent Review: A Woman and her Workplace by Rosemary Flaaten

This book by author Rosemary Flaaten was directed toward those who desire to build relational bridges in life. Targeted toward those in the workplace primarily, but the Scripture supported principles presented can be applied in any situation in life.

Scripture in TM version is presented throughout. I don't often refer to this Bible translation however I enjoyed reading this version as it definitely fit the conversational tone of the book. At first, I was slightly disappointed to read the author's tense of "we". I have struggled with past reviews as I was not drawn in to the author's supporting statements or illustrations because of the awkwardness of "we" or "us".

However, the third person tense actually became a very effective tool in building a relational bridge with me - the reader! Ms. Flaaten had a warm, comfortable, professional yet non-threatening way of relating to her reader. I enjoyed the use of various characters or case studies of women in situations. I laughed, cried and yes - - I could have been Melanie! (page 51).

The invitation to Salvation was given promptly on page 24. Possibly more of an emphasis could have been placed on sin with regard to salvation, but I give kudos to the author for including the salvation message to her reader. I applauded as I read that Jesus Christ on the Cross was the ultimate relational bridge. Amen!

A tool which was quite effective for deeper pondering of the truths presented was "Verses to Study", and "Questions for Reflection."

I appreciated many nuggets of wisdom. On page 47 the author states, "Honesty is living truthfully, and authenticity is being genuine, but integrity includes and goes beyond both of these." She goes on to explain the origin of the word integrity and quotes Henry Cloud from his book Integrity. Love it! As a lover of words and truths supporting wholeness I really appreciated her attention to detail with regard to certain character traits we must pay attention to as true believers in Christ.

Here's another gem found on page 73. (James 2:2-4 TM version is quoted) The author, "In order to develop a connection, we need to build bridges. When we look for the best in others, listen, learn, empathize, love and extend grace, we build relational bridges that can prove to be a lifeline between us. To care for someone, we must let go of the preconceived notions and relinquish our expectations of that person. To care for someone, we must acknowledge his or her present situation and give the gift of grace and acceptance, realizing that what we see is but a very narrow sliver or all that makes up that person. Godly love takes what is presented and seeks to explore and discover more about this person so he or she can be celebrated, not judged. Godly love extends grace."

My favorite story was found on page 79. Ms. Flaaten shares a personal story of people watching. She self talks and it gets ugly but so very relatable!! I learned alot about myself reading her account. I hope I will be convicted quicker when I start being critical of others after reading this chapter.

Lastly, the story on page 123 stuck out to me. Humorous and relatable. I did question the use of the "brown paper bag" as the wrapper the book came in. I felt the book was being depicted almost as a bottle of liquor - something to hide from watching eyes? Somehow the emphasis on the brown paper bag seemed awkward. I would rather her stuff the book in her purse as the book was not a bad thing in itself - this poor woman was seeking help in the situation with her boss.

I enjoyed reviewing this book. I almost regretted not being in a corporate setting where I could share it with other women possibly during a break or lunch hour. A Woman and Her Workplace would be perfect for a small group of women to read at home and discuss the Scripture and questions in every chapter at work. There were many takeaways and reminders for women in the workplace and working at home. The concept of relational bridges and the story of Esther stuck like glue. I will never think of bridges or Esther the same again.

This book reminded me that 24/7/365 no matter before or after punching a time card - I like Esther must seek to build healthy relationships with others. I have a job to do. I will do it with the help of the Lord Jesus Christ. I will do it with the strong biblical principles that under gird every bridge in life.

Imagine opening the wrapper on this book and realizing the pages are frayed as if it were a real songbook. Nice! This book contains sheet music on the first page of every new song title.

I enjoyed reading through the song book and regretted not having the ability to read sheet music! This book was organized in an easy-to-read, clear, concise yet interesting format.

One of my favorite accounts was on page 75. "I Will Sing of My Redeemer" was composed in 1874. Philip Paul Bliss had just written the music to "It Is Well With My Soul" when he and his wife grabbed the opportunity to sing at Moody's Tabernacle. Aboard the Pacific Express, a bridge collapsed. Many cars fell 75 feet into a snowy ravine. Philip survived the crash. He noticed fire had just broken out and Lucy was still inside. The other survivors urged him not to go back in. Philip gallantly stated, "If I cannot save her, I will perish with her," he shouted, plunging into the fiery car. Both died.

In his trunk which arrived in Chicago were the words to "I Will Sing of My Redeemer. " A wonderful ending to a very sad story.

Page 106 is a great story for the Pro-Life Movement!! You have to read it for yourself. Basically a couple finds out they are pregnant while they are in the midst of health issues and political instability.

I quote, "While pondering and praying about these things, we came to realize anew that our courage does not come from a stable world, for the world has never been stable. Jesus Himself was born in the cruelest of times. No, we have babies, we raise families, and risk living because the Resurrection is true! Our baby arrived safe and sound, and we named him Benjamin, which means "most beloved son.' A few weeks later 'Because He Lives' was born in our hearts and poured from our souls:

How sweet to hold our newborn baby

And feel the pride and joy he gives;

But greater still, the calm assurance -

This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

The name of the song? "Because He Lives." Though the song was composed in 1971, the words are for everyone in any situation. Reading about the stories behind the songs was not only interesting but inspiring as well.

Starting on page 127 were patriotic accounts. This book would be a great resource for not only a music teacher but a history teacher! I was not aware of many of the facts presented along with the words for "The Star Spangled Banner", "My Country "Tis of Thee", "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and more...

Happily, my favorite song of all time was included. I have heard the story of John Newton oodles of times but this resource gave me a new fact. There is a verse that Newton added to the end of the song but somehow those words seem to be forgotten for some reason. The words are:

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine;

But God, Who called me here below, shall be forever mine.

Who knew?

One critique I had (only had one) is the fact that this book would benefit from the inclusion of a picture under the title and year of each song. I do believe having a visual of the composer would give value and a serve as an homage to the person behind the hymn. However, the author most likely did not include a photo as this book really was all about glorifying God. Howeer, a suggestion would be to include some sort of artistic or photographic feature between the pages.

Then Sings My Soul by Mr. Robert J. Morgan is an amazing work and a wonderful gift to all who love the Lord, as worship is something we all will do on into eternity. Inspirational and educational all rolled into one with sheet music - this is a book that will remain on the book shelf or better yet - the music stand - to be referred to over and over again...

Book Sneeze Review: Really Woolly Bible Stories By Dayspring

Loved it!! Here's why: This book was based on the NIV Translation Bible. However, for children, it was synopsized into easy-to-understand- Biblical concepts.   Beautifully illustrated, I could not help but look for the little lamb and bunny and often the mouse on each and every page. The book included the lamb because it was all about a Shepherd herding lambs. Naturally the lamb not being part of the book's illustration would clearly have been remiss. I really did feel this book included animals as well as people as being important to God. One of the chapters depicted a kitty and dog in the group of children with adults. This inclusion made me smile as I realized that this book clearly would help young children to not only appreciate the story of Noah's Ark but to understand the importance of Adam naming all the animals in Genesis! God truly does care about all of His creation.     

Clearly, the emphasis in this book is on the parents going beyond the beautifully illustrated storybook - into their own Bibles to read the Gospel accounts listed in each chapter to their children out loud. I so happily cheered as each book and chapter was listed for further reference. For truly parents are the only ones to guide, disciple and mentor their children in the things of God!     

This book was a wonderful example of allowing one to enjoy the beauty of God's creation in the context of the Bible. I became a bit emotional upon finiishing this book because I do not have my own child to read this amazing book with - - but I will hopefully pass along to parents who will no doubt for years to come - enjoy reading Really Woolly Bible Stories to their own children. Hopefully this amazing book will be placed in the Hope Chest to be passed along to the next generation. It is that good. Thank you Dayspring for a beautiful book to be read by all!!!

Book Sneeze Review: The Least Among You DVD Published By Lionsgate

This movie is aimed at many audiences. I say this because there was a clear battle between religiosity vs. faith, racists vs. those who see no distinction in color and those who get involved and those who watch others be involved. There are many angles to this story but it is no doubt God-centered and Holy Spirit driven.

Clearly the takeway was the importance of surrendering to God - to not just knowing His Word, but living it, hiding it in one's heart to use when one must go on the offensive against evil. This movie was also a reminder to true believers in Christ to constantly look for others (the underdogs) to help along the way.

Richard Kelly (Cedric Sanders) got a scholarship to Wesbury Theological College in or around 1965 (this is based on a true story) by writing an essay - and by being a "Negro." Without spoiling the story I will leave out some details which are later presented which form the true foundation of the reason Richard avoids prison.

Oh the blessed brother in Christ that comes alongside Richard! Samuel J. Bennett(Louis Gossett Jr.) befriends Richard and welcomes him into his home whereby his wife also shares godly wisdom and points out the Holy Spirit's leading in Richard's life. This relationship is a trinity of true believers who band together against the evil forces hell-bent on tripping Richard up with the intention of sending him to prison.

Female teacher "Kate" is living in the past. She was a former missionary to Africa. She is hopeless yet she is a teacher of the Bible. Richard seeks her out for help with racism. Right after his room is set on fire, actually a cross that his Mother gave him is lit in his room. Kate has no solutions biblical or other. She is self-absorbed with her loss from the past.

Throughout this movie the battle of good vs. evil is hammered and hung high making it impossible to miss. The struggle to survive is demonstrated in Richard's battle to get money to help his sick mother. Throughout this movie Samuel is a father figure/big brother hero. The relationship is not only heartwarming but inspiring. Seeing the love of God and the understanding of Spirit-led faith lived out by Samuel is something we all need to witness more often. I was inspired by his willingness to lose alot by being a helper to Richard.

The fact that Richard was the first and only person (and the only person of color) to quote Scripture was not lost on me. A scene with Kate teaching the class stuck with me. The students were parsing Scripture with no context whatsoever and Richard set them all straight with his declaration of Isaiah 55:11 and Proverbs 3:5-6. He did not state the actual references however he quoted verbatim (I looked them up).

The title is the theme of this movie. I found four references to the theme, "The Least Among You.' http://www.blueletterbible.org/search/translationResults.cfm?Criteria=The+Least+Among+You&t=NIV Matthew 2:6, Matthew 11:11, Luke 7:28, Luke 9:48. Richard also quoted Heb 4:14-16.

Lastly, the President of the college exited the movie with his admitting he basically wanted to be God by stating, "I am the Gardener. I do the pruning." He hung up his pruning shears in that scene. He won't be needing his gardening gloves in Hades.

Not about to be a spoiler, I just want to close with this. In summation, Richard Kelly knew the Word, hid it in his heart. He may have been many things, but he was not a hypocrite like the rest of the class. I cheered for this hero and his friend. I cheered because the world needs the Word not religiosity. I grieved because sadly the rest of the class represents much of 'Christianity' today. However, God will always provide the hero in each generation. They just have to show up for class. He will do the rest. Rent it today!

Software Review: System Optimizer 8.2 by Digeus Incorporation

This software was super easy to install. With the exception of the Registry Cleaner button (it is not a "repair button" but instead choose "Fix selected invalid entries") enabling the tasks was easy as the buttons were laid out in a square. The Junk Files cleaner processed quickly and easily. Kaboom I instantly cleaned out the junk in my C drive! Disk Space Analyzer was quite informative however since I was testing on a relatively new laptop I was not surprised to see the results. If you were looking to optimize an older computer this task would be helpful.

Process Manager: I would have appreciated a filter. Because many of the well-known companies in our systems are legit though their signatures did not come up as verified. I would have appreciated being able to program a filter for this task. Microsoft came up in red and I was supposed to manually approve them as safe. Possibly spending the time to personalize this process a first time may allow the user to create their own filter for the next scan.

 

Defragment Your Registry I was not able to fully complete this task. I received this error loading it "Hive:unable to map Path:{/Device\Hard Disk Volume 1\Boot\BCD]. I also was not able to minimize the screen as in other tasks though there was a minimize option at the top right of the pane.

 

Duplicate File Folder this was a progress line but no green fillin so I had know way of knowing how much longer the scan would be. I hung in there though and was clearly impressed by how many duplicate file folders the scan located and removed.

 

Services Manager: I do not know enough techie talk to know what to do with this task. However, for someone willing to learn more about their system, this task may be a benefit.

 

Overall, I would recommend anyone looking to optimize their system to contact Digeus and check out this product first-hand. Good news! Independent Book Review: Held By God: Finding Hope by Recognizing His Provision in the Midst of Suffering by Lori Phillips and Lynn Willers

Held By God is an amazing work, penned by two sisters Lynn Willers and Lori Phillips. The dual author's voice lent a warmth to the book - one which I have not come across before. Sisters Lori and Lynn are twins so I should not have been surprised by their united front. However, much more apparent was their shared love for the Lord which was boldly, unabashedly shared throughout this anointed book.

Their passion for coming alongside their reader to comfort and encourage was clear as sisters Lynn and Lori jointly shared not only their trials and tribulations but their faith. Throughout this book the co-authors returned to Being Held By God in any situation. Undoubtedly the content supported the title - the takeaway hope in any circumstance when one enters the valley in the arms of God.

Chapter One ushers in the beautifully shared story which occurred on the walk to school when the girls were six years old.  Lynn cut her hand very badly after dropping a jar that she was bringing for "show and tell." Clearly an angel (possibly Good Samaritan for those less inclined to believe so easily in angels) carries her to a house nearby to get help. The incorporation of Scripture pointing the reader back to God's faithfulness is included in this chapter (as well as all other chapters).

Beginning on page 54 I began to cheer for the sisters! I realized they were educating their readers - no - empowering and encouraging their reader to challenge the western medical establishment. I applauded as the sisters became their own health care advocates when they did not agree fully with their doctor's assessments. The doctor insisting on Lynn having the "pleurodesis treatment" and instead Lynn insisting on speaking to a Thoracic surgeon illustrated the importance of standing firm in all medical situations. Her account is a reminder to us all that we truly are the consumer - customer if you will - even though we may never have realized this role before. We must be Bereans when it comes to the role we play in the health care industry.

I must mention the coffee cup illustration in Chapter Four! Without being a spoiler of course...Danny is the twin's brother. He innocently protects a coffee cup from all harm to find out at the end of the day that his efforts were in vain as what he needed to do was much easier! That story stuck with me as many of the illustrations similar to this one in the book also stuck with me. The tone of Held By God draws you in and you actually feel like you are one of the family. I chuckled along with Lori and Lynn in Chapter Four for sure!

"Why would the Lord bring us all the way out here, just to have this doctor's door slammed shut so abruptly? In retrospect, this was one of those moments that would have made us laugh had we seen it from God's perspective. When God opens a door, sometimes he doesn't want us to just walk through the door. Sometimes He wants us to walk through, turn right, and then go down the hallway." (page 98)

Relatable? Yes. This book asks many "Why?" questions the reader can relate to - but the word "Why?" does not end with a question mark. Before the ink is dry on the 'y" the sisters often give a Scripture verse. God is held high in this book. The authors come alongside their readers (many of whom no doubt are also suffering physically and hurting emotionally) to share their story and explain how asking "Why?" and remaining in the questioning phase of "Why?" too long won't help the situation at all. Only surrendering to God and letting Him endure the pain with you is the answer and is the theme throughout.

I enjoyed hearing the seasons of Women of Faith Conferences and how each topic ministered to the girls right where they were in their healing journeys. Especially the last conference mentioned touched my heart because the girls attended albeit their Mom was not with them that year.

One of my favorite mentions of servant hood in the book was on page 130. I quote, "During those times, we learned alot about sacrificial giving. Caring for someone with cancer is hard. It is messy, and it is heart wrenching. However, it gives us the opportunity to be like Christ and really show people how much we love them. Sacrificial love is when we place ourselves in situations that take us way out of our comfort zones. During those months with Mom, we realized a truth. We don't show our love for someone by doing something that is easy for us to do or doesn't take much effort on our part. We show our love for them by doing the things that are difficult or hard for us to do. That is when we are most like Christ." Amen and Amen sisters!

I found myself weeping unexpectedly in many chapters. Especially in Chapter Seven Silver Linings in a Dark Cloud I could not read the words before me because the tears were in the way. My head ached from crying but then the pain of crying passed as I read on...and then silly me was bawling again but this time with tears of joy! How wonderful to experience so much emotion - pain and suffering but hope and happiness on the same page. I cried with Lynn as she listened to "holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty", when the fellow bed mate in the hospital helped her when she couldn't even help herself....and so very many times throughout this very special work.

A Bittersweet Celebration was my most favorite part of the entire book. Needless to say, I called my Mom right away and told her I loved her. I chatted with her about random topics that we both have in common. We laughed together during this phone call because we could. I thought I heard her sadness when I said Goodbye. I was reminded of Lynn and Lori's mention of their sadness in not being able to call their Mom as they used to do without hesitation. Unlike Lynn and Lori's Mom, my own does not know the Lord (Romans 10:9-11).

However, the fact that this book's final pages presented the Gospel - just one more time was not lost on me. For this book truly glorifies the Lord and is for everyone - no matter who you are or what you are facing. The medical condition CPT may have been the reason for the book being written at first, but clearly the sisters have allowed the Lord to take this topic and use it as a springboard for a relationship with Christ. For that reason, though I do not suffer with CPT or lost a parent to disease I will share this book with one who does not know Christ and as a result - though they may or may not suffer - no matter what they will never again be without hope. For to be Held By God truly begins with surrender.

Thank you Lynn and Lori for this amazingly hopeful, informative, enjoyable warm and comforting work. Many will be ministered to as a result. This book is anointed.

Book Sneeze Review: What In The World Is Going On? By Dr. David Jeremiah

Clearly this book was written to believers in Christ as the subtitle educates the reader regarding 10 Prophetic Clues You Cannot Afford To Ignore. Someone without a spiritual foundation in place may be blinded to the prophecy and promises presented (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Dr. David Jeremiah includes the non-believer with a challenge to salvation beginning in Chapter Three and three times thereafter warnings are given to the reader to "get right with God" before it is too late. For the reader who studies the Bible and seeks historical signs of the last days he/she will appreciate the author's weaving of Old and New Testament into the culmination of Prophecy that is Revelations. The author explains in vivid detail with Scripture references throughout.

On page 19, I especially appreciated the explanation of the importance of Israel becoming a Jewish state in 1948. This historical timeline was explained by author Milton B. Lindberg, "Without the existence of the nation of Israel, we would not be able to say with certainty that we are in the last days. That single event, more than any other, is the most prominent sign that we are living in the final moments before the coming of Jesus! The Hebrew People have been called God's timepiece of the ages."

In Chapter One, Dr. Jeremiah answered the questions, "Why is Israel so important? What does all this mean to me?"  I quote, "Let's return to the questions we posed at the beginning of this chapter. Why has this tiny nation with a population of less than six million become the geopolitical center of the world? Why is a fledgling country with a total land space hardly larger than New Jersey mentioned in the nightly news more than any other nation except the United States? Or, to sum it up, why is Israel so important? I hope this chapter has helped you answer that question. Israel is important because the fulfillment of God's covenant with its founder, Abraham, greatly affects every one of us. We have shown why it's important for our nation to continue to support and protect Israel. Nations who befriend Israel will be blessed; those that do not will be cursed."

I learned on page 28 & 31 that the US is number one in oil consumption as of 2007. However, the US is 11th in oil reserves. Do the math and you learn why the Middle East is rich in oil and why the US depends on the countries in the Middle East more than we may like to admit. Oil!

Also amazing to learn of OT prophesies and the story of Daniel interpreting King Nebuchadnezzar's dream, the rebirth of the Roman Empire and how Islam came to be. Dr. David Jeremiah is an anointed teacher and this book was not only educational but fascinating as at times it was quite a meal, but then the next chapter he would segue into a slightly different topic though all chapters hammered home the truth that we can see the signs of the times as outlined in Matthew 24:1-31 specifically.

I don't recall hearing both views (pre-trib, post-trib). I clearly enjoyed the details of pre-tribulation, which I personally believe to be the right take on the Rapture.  People beware - Fatah is for all followers of Allah and Fatah is coming home to roost in every country!!

I come away with a much better understanding of what the Koran is and who created it, as well as the clear deceptive teachings about Allah - who is clearly not the One, True God of the Bible. Allah was named after a moon god. For when God introduced himself to Moses, He gave His name YHWH-Jehovah.

On page 90 & 91 Hal Lindsey explains, "The doctrine of Satan is that all religions are equally valid, that all paths lead to God, that God is impersonal, unknowable, and it is therefore irrelevant to Him what we call Him or how we worship Him. If Allah and God are one and the same, then wouldn't the worship of the Hindu chief gods, Vishnu and Shiva, also be the worship of Allah and God, only by a different name? Pretty soon, everybody is God....Which is the same as saying that nobody is."

Lastly, I appreciated the Albanian tradition of folding their napkin and realizing that Jesus also did the same in the tomb when he folded his grave clothes. I so enjoyed that story on page 213.

There is so much more I could share about this special work by Dr. David Jeremiah. He has an obvious love for his reader, saved and seeker alike. I find it hard for someone to finish reading this book if they did not truly have an understanding of God, His Word and prophecy. However, Dr. Jeremiah does what he is called to do - teach and preach the Gospel. His repeated calls to salvation reinforced his calling and was not missed by me. The last call of four was on page 117. He must have included that call to salvation to bless the person that perservered....

Buyer beware this book is a meal and then some. However, if eaten in portions and digested slowly, you will be grateful you ate it. Believers need not be confused or fearful for the future. For if you face the future with God, you will know who wins the battle and who is thrown into the Lake of Fire. Dr. David Jeremiah helps us understand and helps us to make the choice whether to be burned or to be blessed. We must choose as we come closer to the return of Christ. We must be prepared to answer the question posed often these days, "What In The World Is Going On?". Dr. Jeremiah equips us to answer this question with Scripture, facts and prophetic explanations. This is a book you may not want to lend to your friend for you will no doubt scribble, highlight and refer back to it often. It is a precious reference book. Buy your friend his/her own book. He/she may need it after the Rapture.

Outlive Your Life: You Were Made To Make A Difference by Max Lucado

In Mr. Lucado's words, this book is a "call to compassion". So if you want none of that, this book is not for you! 100% of the royalties from this book will benefit children and families through World Vision and other charities as described on Mr. Lucado's website. These royalties will be used to create healthy, sustainable communities in Northern Uganda.

This book is aimed at reaching the "Average Joe" true believer who may question if God can use him/her to advance the Kingdom. One criticism I did have in reading the inside front dust cover was that Max was calling all blue collar workers to the mat. That's admirable, but living in SE Florida, we do roll up our sleeves and do ministry with the very richest of the rich believers. So I felt his calling all blue collar workers verbiage was a slight affront to the Solomons of our day who are in their best servant/slave years serving God whether in our community or abroad.

The theme verse in this book clearly was Ephesians 2:10. Now how can one argue with that?!

In Chapter One page six (second paragraph) the statistics were astounding! I quote, "And we have enough bedrooms to house the orphans. Here's the math. There are 145 million orphans worldwide. Nearly 236 million people in the United States call themselves Christians. From a purely statistical standpoint, American Christians by themselves have the wherewithal to house every orphan in the world.

Of course, many people are not in a position to do so. They are elderly, infirm, unemployed, or simply feel no call to adopt. Yet what if a small percentage of them did? Hmmmm, let's say 6 percent. If so, we could provide loving homes for more than 14.1 million children in sub-Saharan Africa who have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Among the noble causes of the church, how does that one sound? "American Christians Stand Up for AIDS Orphans." Wouldn't that headline be a welcome one?"

Chapter Four is so humorous! His account of men shopping entitled "Clueless Husband Shopping Squad" kept me in stitches! Also humorous was the fictionally depicted (but factually accurate for the most part) account of Ananias & Sapphira. I actually learned alot from this account as I went into my Bible and read the NIV account. I appreciated reading the account in a format akin to the Message Bible version but in the author's own words - which by the way - I  do enjoy his writing style! He is pithy in his approach but packs a punch often as he appeals to the common man and woman as he relates to them in a casual yet direct manner.

Immediately preceding each chapter, I appreciated a Scripture verse and a prayer from the author. This style was similar to a daily devotion which would really appeal to those too busy to read several chapters at one sitting. His prayers were heartfelt and prayed in simple terms which often caused me to become teary-eyed. Most were about being humble servants before the Lord. Inspiring for sure! Mr. Lucado included an invitation to salvation for the reader in the first third of the book. Applause for this inclusion so early on in the book.

The author's discussion of hypocrisy was eye-opening. If you are searching on Amazon.com you must search inside the book and check out page 92!

Here is a portion, "To do a good thing is a good thing. To do good to be seen is not. In fact, to do good to be seen is a serious offense. Here's why. Hypocrisy turns people away from God. When God-hungry souls walk into a congregation of wannabe superstars, what happens? When God-seekers see singers strut like Las Vegas entertainers... when they hear the preacher - a man of slick words, dress, and hair - play to the crowd and exclude God...when other attendees dress to be seen and make much to-do over their gifts and offerings...when people enter a church to see God yet can't see God because of the church, don't think for a second that God doesn't react. "Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don't make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won't be applauding" (Matthew 6:1 MSG)." Amen and Amen!!

On a negative note (sorry Mr. Lucado), I did not appreciate the secular culture icon's (Bono) reference of people groups being "an accident of latitude" (page 104). This inclusion and quote was unnecessary and offensive to the believer as it directly contradicts (Psalm 139) God's sovereignty. I give grace in this matter as I believe the author's intentions were not to offend the reader. However, I was offended by the use of that reference.

Lastly, the author's challenge to the reader is brilliantly posed, "We can rise too high but can never stoop too low. What gift are you giving that he did not first give? What truth are you teaching that he didn't first teach? You love. But who loved you first? You serve. But who served the most? What are you doing for God that he could not do alone? How kind of him to use us. How wise of us to remember."

The last chapter does not end without giving the reader more tools to fulfill Ephesians 2:10. Mr. Lucado includes quite a meaty Discussion & Action Guide.

I highly recommend this work to all who have an interest in doing what all true believers in Christ are called to do as mandated in Matthew 25:34-36. This book is not only uplifting and inspiring but also convicting.

In the author's words, "None of us can help everyone. But all of us can help someone. And when we help them, we serve Jesus. Who would want to miss a chance to do that?"

Amen and Amen. Buy this book and by doing so help others. Then get out there and Outlive Your Life!
