Courageous by Randy Alcorn

The first chapter of this book was amazing! Without being a spoiler, it wasn't until I finished the first chapter that the reality of what I had just read hit with a bang! The first chapter was clever and drew me in and gave me a taste of more intriguing storylines.

The second and third chapter were a bit slow and I had to dig deep to keep going. While I struggled with Chapter Three, I realized Courageous was in my movie theatre! I thought that was cool and knowing this was also a movie, I cracked open the book and dug in (I like comparing books to their movie counterparts).

After becoming familiar with each of the four families discussed in this story, I began to look forward to realizing how the lives would connect. This book was family-friendly, Christ-focused and a blessing to behold. Courageous depicted the hard life of boys without fathers who turn to gangs to belong. The author also was quite graphic in describing the violence and danger associated with being a cop. I appreciated that graphic depiction, as many Christian fiction stories can be a little too "nicey nice" for the evil days we are truly living (Matthew 24:4-14).

A criticism I had was the repeated reference to the 'Resolution'. The Bible could have been that reference point to draw the men into the agreement to be better fathers and husbands. A page from the Bible could have just as easily been printed out and framed and referred to by Scripture and verse. I feel there was a bit of a marketing/promotion of a new fad which I have come to realize is correct, as "Focus on the Family" is pushing for a men's group to embrace the 'Resolution'. I am all for men becoming more godly, but have them bring their Bible's and not a new program with materials. We have enough 'programs'! We need to wear out the pages of our own Bibles (that is just my opinion.)

Another criticism I had what that there way too many references to food in this book! Not just humans consuming, preparing, or rejoicing over food - but the people giving their dogs food often and food that dogs should not be eating! One of the dogs was sick so the father took it to the vet. The man had just told the wife that he had given the dog people food (forget what it was) and then the dog wasn't feeling well so he brought it to the vet. Right after bringing the dog home from the vet he gave the dog pancakes, bacon and maple syrup! Duh. No wonder the dog was sick. I hope the dog didn't get fed unnecessary antibiotics in between.

Not to beat a dead horse so to speak, but, the dog eating badly scenario occurred with three separate dogs and those dogs were each mentioned at least twice each. I found those types of food discussions ridiculous. Christians including food in everything I am used to - but the inclusion of the canine cooking eating badly - did not enjoy so much!

I hope to see Courageous the movie soon. The book was really good. I enjoyed reading it and hope to hear more family-friendly plots from author Randy Alcorn!

Earthen Vessels by Matthew Lee Anderson

Guilty. I chose this book by its cover.  In this case, that adage applied. Wasn't wise. Why don't I ever learn? I was also drawn to the concept which I understood to be how our bodies as believers in Christ mattered to our faith.

I found that concept fascinating as I am very much into an organic lifestyle basically involving our implementation of a Mediterranean diet. For those two reasons I chose to review this book.

I smiled as I read the Contents page. Tough topics were presented: Evangelical Inattention and the Secular Body, Tattoos and the Meaning of our Bodies, Homosexuality and the Christian Body, etc.

I still had high hopes for a great read after I dove into the Preface titled In Which I Clear My Throat. Chapter One included Scripture and mention of Paul the Apostle. It was interesting.

However, Chapter Two presented a roadblock. I did not  understand the author's intention with the use of the word "evangelical." I consider myself an evangelical Christian. I try not to stereotype any people group. I understand truths to be evident when presented with statistical data. In this book, I heard the author's opinion with regard to his summation that overall most evangelical Christians are not interested in having healthy bodies at least as compared to having a healthy faith. I did not read of proof of his conclusion.

Therefore, since he was using supposition, he should have used personal examples to make his case. Do case studies, use your experience, man! There truly is danger in making assumptions with regard to any class of people.

Chapter Seven was awkwardly presented. In that chapter titled The Body and Its Pleasure the author loosely threw in Scripture about Paul being the most equipped to speak about sex. On page 124 I realized without a shadow of a doubt that this would not be a book I would recommend. Respectfully, Scripture is not to be interpreted with an "I think I can" attitude. The author made the mistake of referring to Scripture and then reasoning how he "thought" it would apply and then speaking it to his audience as if it were truth.

Page 124," What follows in the rest of this chapter, then, is not a comprehensive treatment of human sexuality, but my attempt to outline what I think is distinctive about Christian sexuality in a world that worships sex. My goal is to say what I think Scripture thinks sex is rather than focusing primarily on what sex is not. Naturally, I draw on the account of the body I have sketched in earlier chapters to make my case. But I should also note that much of what follows is heavily influenced by-though not a direct translation of-John Paul II's Theology of the Body."

There were many broad brush strokes outlining how to do this or that. Legalism was mentioned. The author seemed to want to teach and guide and solve problems in "the church". There were rays of sunshine throughout but getting through the wordy, opinionated, secularly quoted sections was a struggle.

Writing a nonfiction work in the Christian market these days no doubt is a challenge. The market has become broad and if a book focuses too widely on too many facets of the "Christian Church" of course some will be offended, some may applaud, and some may change the channel.

I fell into the latter group. Mr. Anderson, I am an evengelical that does care about the body, does love God's Word and gosh darnit I can crack open that book and hear from the Holy Spirit. I will then learn all I need to know about my body, sex, and homosexuality!

God's Love Letters To You by Dr. Larry Crabb

Speechless. That was the one word that came to mind as I cracked open this book for the very first time. I am not often without words especially when presented with hundreds of thousands of words awaiting my review.

This book packed a powerful punch from Genesis through Revelations in a way which only Scholar Dr. Larry Crabb would be capable of delivering. Personal, direct and Scripture laden, this book exuded love and faith all rolled into one.

This would be the one book (besides your Bible) that you would pack in your overnight bag. The one book that you would sneak out to your car in the black of night to retrieve before turning the light out "just because you wanted to read one more page before getting your zzzzs". The one book you would buy several copies of even before recognizing to give as a gift.

What made this book truly special was the very direct way in which the author whispered Truth to the reader. The format was simple. There was a short devo, then a Take A Moment to Reflect section followed by Take A Moment To Pray. Concisely written but powerful this was a book that I shall not forget.

Clearly the Lord was glorified in God's Love Letters to You. He know doubt sang over the author (at the top of his "lungs") - Zephaniah 3:17. A party broke out in Heaven when this book landed on bookshelves around the world.

Throughout the book, I was challenged to pursue a more personal relationship with God. The back cover confirmed this was the intended goal of the book as it stated,

Dear (your name here),
I love you.
Love, God.

Though I obviously reviewed this book in less than 40 days (the author's stated timeframe for this annointed devotional-style book) I was blessed beyond belief to read it in several sittings. I no doubt will pick it up again and again. I also intend to purchase many copies for people I know and may meet. I will keep a copy in my car, in my house, in my favorite lounge chair outside. I will enjoy this book for many years to come.

Thank you Dr. Crabb for a book of love letters that truly enabled me to connect with God in a way I had almost forgotten existed! God's love will never let us down. God's love is endless....His love letters (the Bible) the best letters one could hope to read. Get your copy today. Someone may just ask you if you fell in love cause you will not be easily able to wipe that smile off your face!

The Quotable Rogue by Matt Lewis

The Quotable Rogue was just that. Quotes by Sarah Palin written by Matt Lewis. In the Foreword, author Matt Lewis shared, "Before most Americans knew the name Sarah Palin , I blogged about this exciting conservative governor from Wasilla, Alaska."

Apart from the Foreword and Introduction the author steps aside, as this book is actually from Sarah Palin. In her own words, Ms. Palin reminded me of the exciting (and disappointing) time in which she came alongside John McCain as he attempted to become our President.

Having heard many "Palinisms" in the past, I wrongly assumed this book would just be more of the same quotations. I was impressed by how many media outlets Ms. Palin participated in interviews with and how many times she repeated what she said on the major networks, but in more depth. Seems the major networks would take one sentence out of many and repeat the same quotes over and over. From this book I realized there was no doubt so much more than the captions conveyed in the major media outlets.

I enjoyed hearing her speak about big government and warning the reader in a prophet-like fashion years ago - the problems we would be facing if the President and government did this and did that... Many of her predictions are now being fulfilled. As we know, a prophet is only as good as his/her predictions. Ms. Palin surely has made good on many of her predictions as stated in black and white in The Quotable Rogue.

This book was unique in its format. I learned about the Constitution actually as well as states rights and how states rights are being violated by big government today. The "chapters" (they weren't really chapters but sections actually) were brief and several quotes were included in each section. I read through the book quickly. However, this book will be one I will refer to again and again. I say this because it was meaty in the prophetic sense.

I did want Sarah Palin to become Vice President. I was so disappointed when things fell apart with John McCain. I hope she will consider running for President this season. In any event, this book confirms the fact that Sarah Palin knows her history, the Constitution, the Government and so much more. However, throughout this book it was also clear she loves her husband, her family and her country with reckless abandon. She is a rogue in many ways. Her quotes not only made me smile but cheer - - for we live in a country that allows all of us to be a bit rogue like in however we choose.

Well done Matt Lewis! Keep blogging and writing books for us Palin fans. The world can never contain enough Palinisms!

Freedom from Performing by Becky Harling

This will be my last review for NavPress as this publisher has discontinued their blogger review program.

Anointed. Simply anointed best describes this book by Becky Harling. What I loved about this devo-conversational style book of encouragement and Bible truth was the down-to-earth way the author came alongside me. Often a Christian author will hit the wrong balance of speaking, teaching, exhorting and challenging the reader. Not so in Freedom from Performing.

The author hit the perfect note in regard to balancing Truth with faith, thus eliminating the irritating "legalistic" mumbo jumbo that so many devo style books deliver. There was much emphasis on a personal relationship with Christ (applause) as opposed to having to do many works to please God. The title was perfect for this book because every chapter in this book nailed the mission of the title. Freedom from legalism, bondage to having to be "good enough." The subtitle was Grace in an Applause-Driven World.

This was the first time I read a book by Becky Harling. I would jump at the chance to review another book by this author. Any Bible teaching church would benefit from this book. I will not loan this book out but will keep it in my bookshelf to refer to again and again as it delivered a Holy Spirit infusion each and every time I picked it up.

Well done! Applause in order for Freedom from Performing!

You Were Born for This by Bruce Wilkinson

Having read Bruce Wilkinson's mega bestselling Prayer of Jabez and Secrets of The Vine, I anticipated a book which would inspire and intrigue from beginning to end. I was not disappointed!

Right away, the stories about people who put these principles into practice and connected with others to deliver God's love to those God directed them to helped me understand the mission of You Were Born for This. The mission upheld the fact that God wants all of His children to deliver miracles to others and to remind them of His love and desire to have a personal relationship with all of humanity.

We can be His delivery agents as long as we are willing to be the hands and feet to do the work. Subtitled 7 Keys to a Life of Predictable Miracles, this book was delivered in a How To format. My only objection in this entire book was that at times it did feel a bit "methodical" as if God would need His people to approach His Word in a certain way. I know the author did not intend to replace God's directions but some sections could have been left out or abbreviated. One example of this critique was a sort of "infomercial" about the author and his previous books.

This book was an exhortation to live your life as never before. Page 15, "You Were Born For This is a bold initiative to reclaim the miraculous as normal way of life. Through biblical insights, true stories, and practical  how-tos, I'll show you what that new normal could look like for you."

It was written to the born again believer who already has a desire to serve God and be a part of an exciting journey to help others see God. It would be difficult to get through this book if you did not already have a passion for Christ and His Word.

So many great stories which I liken to parables. The stories stuck with me especially the story on page 20 about easter eggs! My all time favorite quote which I will never forget was found on page 102 in the section entitled Getting to the root of fear. I quote, "All of us feel fear when we are about to do something that involves considerable risk. Risk, after all, means there's no guarantee of success. And usually when we feel fear, we don't  proceed. But fear is a fruit, not the root. The root is unbelief in our hearts.  That's why the greatest obstacle to a life marked by miracles is not fear but unbelief."

Yikes. I enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end. I feel I am better prepared to go into all the world and make fishers of men. I am reminded to pray daily to be available and always ask, "What can I do for you?" Then wait for God to do the work!

Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 by Jan Johnson

Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 was subtitled "A Personal Retreat Guide." I was quite excited to realize this book would be a guide for getting time alone with God to grow in my faith. Finding tools to slow down and allow God to quiet my mind are important to me as learning these concepts allows me to help not only myself but many other women as well.

Each chapter confirmed the previous chapter's message, which was basically growing closer to God through understanding His Word and letting it seep into your soul in a way that that Scripture had not previously done. Psalm 23 was the main Scripture presented.

I enjoyed the history of Psalm 23 as well as the explanation of the individual words and their original meanings. I also appreciated the consistency of each chapter: Opening to God's Message, Immersed in God's Message, Responding to God's Word and Resting with God in the Message. I also found the many questions for personal exploration interesting and helpful for personal introspection.

This book would be a good start for someone who needs to take a break from life and get back to God. The guide may also be good for a few women to use together if even just for a walk in the park as the guide suggested.

There were several areas of the guide I found concerning. I noticed a few references with a New Age undertone. One was to imagine God speaking to me and what color would I imagine during that interaction? I liken that visualization exercise with the New Age concept of Chakra. Imagining a conversation with God and having to visualize a color is not a biblical concept. God does not need anything added unto Himself as He is the epitomy of color.

Also, I was to imagine an empty chair next to me and God sitting in it. I remember that exercise from my "embrace your inner child" days before I came to Christ (I was a sold out hard core New Ager). And yes, the chair exercise was a New Age concept and still is today.

This book is marketed to "Christians" however in order for any person to commune with God, one must be "born again" (John 3:7). I was disappointed an Invitation to Salvation (Romans 10:9-11) was absent. Having the invitation or explanation of being born again provides essential clarification to the reader how to have a personal relationship with Christ. I say this because I was a 'Christian" all my life and talked to God, but it was not until I understood what the Bible had to say that I realized God did not hear my prayers until I became His child through Romans 10:9-11. John 9:3 (I do not review books from a religious standard).

Without separating the sheeps from the goats, the question then is, 'Who are you talking to? God or the enemy of your soul?" Being a Berean, I not only read the back cover of the book but the About the Author section. I saw the reference to Ms. Johnson having a DMin in Ignatian spirituality and spiritual formation not on the back cover but inside the book. I learned she writes primarily about spiritual formation topics. I googled Ignation spirituality http://ignatianspirituality.com/what-is-ignatian-spirituality/10-elements-of-ignatian-spirituality/. Had I only read the back cover I would have missed this important element of Ms. Johnson's theology.

Overall, I would recommend this guide to be used as a tool. I would treat it merely as a walk through a buffet line, taking just those best and useful tasty morsels that would benefit me, my soul and my walk with God. On the other hand, The Bible in its entirety I would eat as a nine course meal and more. All of Psalm 23 is a confidence psalm as the author shared. Spend each day in Psalm 23 and you will enjoy white glove table service for the rest of your life. You will be so satiated you will want to share your bounty with all who pass by your table.

Starting a Micro Business by Carol Topp

I enjoyed Starting a Micro Business - from the Micro Business for Teens book series. The book was informative and no doubt a godsend to teens and mothers and fathers of teens as it was a great tool to get a teen started in a business of any kind.

In the Introduction the author Carol Topp explained the reason she wrote the book, "This book is geared toward teenagers and their lives. There are no unrealistic expectations of opening a restaurant. There are ideas of businesses that real teenagers have started and run successfully. I provide a lot of examples of teenagers I know personally. I walk you through some very important topics such as making a plan and avoiding debt. That's how this book is different!"

The author is a CPA thus she has the knowledge and ability to offer her readers practical advice about becoming a micro business owner. I found the definition of a micro business as opposed to an entrepreneurship interesting. The Micro Businesses Are Popular statistics (page 13) was quite surprising.

Examples of teens running micro businesses inspired me to be better focused on my own micro business (which I had not referred to as such until reading this book)! I need to get Dave's phone number (page 31) as I could also use a bit of help with my iTunes/Ipod Smart List. Examples of micro businesses a teen can pursue were very  helpful. I appreciated http://www.1and1.com/, http://www.badomelet.com/, http://www.websitetips.com/ and so many more.

The Business Plan charts presented a treasure chest of guidance for a person of any age to utilize when planning to start a business. So many businesses fail for lack of planning. This non-intimidating resource was so helpful in considering the foundation for a business of any size. Thedown to earth format allowed me to realize planning a micro business for a teen may be easier than anticipated.

I appreciated Scripture verses along with secular sayings. The subtle backdrop was the Bible and also the author repeatedly reminded the teen to speak with his/her parents about what they learned from reading the book. Ms. Topp's offer of accounting advice if the reader did not yet have an accountant made me smile. She came alongside her reader throughout the book with encouragement and promoted a "can do" mantra.

Finally a book available for teens somewhere in between a lemonade stand and a storefront. No doubt the entire series will be a welcome resource if it also teaches, exhorts and encourages youth as did Starting a Micro Business. Every teen parent would benefit from reading Starting a Micro Business. I enjoyed it immensely and hope to read more of the Micro Business for Teens book series soon.

Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
