The Chew: Daytime on ABC

Every once in awhile a gem of a tv show pops up and I cannot help but shoot a post about it. The Chew is one such family-friendly food-focused  fabulous find Monday-Friday 1:00 eastern! It replaced the long-time running All My Children in that time slot. I dvr just about everything nowadays. My dvr is perfect for this program. I don't want to miss a single show! You will understand why after watching it for the first time. The co hosts are Clinton Kelly, Mario Batali, Michael Symon (love him!), Carla Hall and Daphne Oz.

Check out a sample below. You can see more at http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/the-chew.

Carla Hall is one of those people you want in your life. She exudes warmth, unconditional love and a proud heritage and an unabashedly exuberant joyous excitement for family and cooking for family. No doubt each co host intertwined their love of cooking with family, but Carla Hall doesn't just talk about it. Her whole body literally does a happy dance when it is her turn to share her recipes.

I was not as wowed as the rest of the watching world when Paula Deen was the celebrity guest last week. She kind of took over and cut off my new The Chew bff Carla Hall. I don't care how famous you are - you are still a guest and grandstanding never is acceptable. I was shocked when Paula Deen double dipped into the pudding and then leaned over the entire bowl to dig in for more. Gross!

Other than a few minor infractions this show rocks!!! I am glad it is not rehearsed and polished to perfection. I enjoy the spontaneity so very much. Can't wait for Monday's The Chew!

Behind the Veils of Yemen by Audra Grace Shelby

This book written by first time author Audra Grace Shelby (not her real name btw.) Her name and her family's names have been changed to protect their identity as they are still serving in Islamic countries and must have their identities hidden for protection) was an eye opening peek into a world that I have never given much consideration.

I was changed forever about my views on missionaries and missionaries bringing their young families to the mission field. In this case, the family was headed to Yemen for a four-year commitment. I approached this book with a negative mindset. I judged this woman from the start, "How could that family even consider placing their three young children in a third-world country that is dangerous and hostile to Christians?" I did not realize the extent of this culture in regard to their disrespect for women and girls either (to discuss in detail later).

Why Yemen?
I detected the same doubt and judgment I felt in beginning this story confirmed by others in the book starting on page 13. A flight attendant clearly was appalled to know the family was headed to live in Yemen. And on page 14 I quote, "I leaned back against my own headrest and closed my eyes. Words from a well-meaning friend echoed in my ear, "How can you take those babies to live in a place like that?"

Again page 15 ushered in doubt, this time from Audra's lips, "I bit my lip, remembering my apprehension when we knew God was calling us to Yemen. I had envisioned an easier place, such as a village near a beach in the Caribbean. But God was leading us to a place plagued with poverty and sickness and strict adherence to Islamic law, a place where evangelism was forbidden. I had dug in my heels. "Kevin, I'm not sure we should raise our children in a place like Yemen. Look how many children die before they are six! It could be dangerous for them as well as us."

God led the Way
Halfway  through this book I relaxed. I gleaned the details of a culture I knew nothing about. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing of Audra's adventures, emotions, trials and joys. Her writer's voice was so down-to-earth yet explicit in describing dirt and wind in a way that was so helpful in allowing me to feel I was right alongside of her experiencing Yemen for the first time with her family. I really appreciated her willingness to be transparent in all areas of the journey.

Page 102 introduced for the first time the fact that this family's faith put to rest the doubts about being in God's will in their decision to go to the mission field in Yemen. I cried as I read and experienced her relief and her connection with God. A simple thing as a crate that had been "lost" and found God used to remind Audra that He saw her, He loved her, and that He would protect her and her family, " Tears began to fill my eyes. I sat quietly, understanding the answer I had been seeking, an answer that had been with me all along. The difference in my faith was that Jesus is alive. I talked with Him, and He talked with me because He was not someone dead and gone. He interactively and authoritatively reigned in my life. Whether I had been taught about Him or taught about someone else did not change who He is. It did not stop His living presence No teaching or religion could change or substitute that. I remembered Fatima's words. "You are qawia, strong in your heart." I realized that what made me strong was living strength, given by Someone who could only supply it if He was alive. "You are Messiah!" I whispered."..."I looked again at the sky. "Thank you, Lord," I whispered. "Thank you for answering my doubts and helping me remember the difference."

Amen! I was convicted by a situation in which Audra shared her struggles to reach the people. She had emailed a friend in the US. Her friend's response was a bit like Job's friends when Job was going through his trials. I realized I may have responded the very same way to a missionary. However, I will not behave in that manner after reading Behind the Veils of Yemen!

I could speak for days about the chock-full of informative details of this book but instead will end with one more realization I gleaned from page 191.Audra arrived to visit some women in a hut. As she approached the hut, she saw and heard a seven-month old baby flailing in the dirt unattended. The baby had "soiled" its clothes (they don't use diapers). This baby's mother was not present in the town and this would not have happened to a baby if it were a boy. Hard-to-hear details about abuse of baby girls, young girls and women ripped my heart apart. However, what was harder to bare (and no doubt awful for Audra to bare) was the fact that if we as Christians are going to love and mentor these women, we must not interfere in that type of situation immediately - if we are to evangelize. Audra shared that taking that baby girl out of the dirt would have offended the women, not only because Audra was a Christian (Christians cannot touch the Koran and many other rules) but because their custom dictated otherwise. Self-control was the order of the day for Audra in that village!

I do believe the audience for this book no doubt would be born again Christian women of all ages. Highly recommended reading for young girls mission minded or otherwise. A man would benefit from reading this book if he were sensitive to the needs of women Christian or otherwise. But, I do believe the author's voice would best be received by women.

I cheered when Audra shared about going back to Yemen at the end of the book. She had her two-month old baby on her lap in the plane. She shared that many at home were worried about the health of their newborn suffering SIDS, which is quite prevalent in third-world societies with babies of that age. However, this time I smiled because I had come to a place of understanding. It is up to each of us to decide what God's will is for us and our families. It may not make sense to others (and often not even to us) but God will confirm or deny our mission. We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus - the author and finisher of our faith! Audra did and her story supported this fact. Pick up this life-changing book today. You will never look at missions the same way again - - and for me that was a very good thing!

Thank You, God, for Blessing Me by Max Lucado

This book was written for pre-school age children and effectively taught its reader how to be grateful. Beautifully illustrated and simple to understand, Max Lucado has once again caused me to tear up at the words a bug emits. I love flowers and the fact was not lost on me that the bugs were engulfed in large flowers, a beautiful blue sky and colorful fruits and greenery.

The sun beamed brightly across an entire page as the ladybug and purple fly held dandelions as if they were ready to shake them and let loose the wispy seeds (remember growing up - blowing the dandelion seeds into the wind as your dad yelled because they would make more work for him?! I do, so that page was extra special for me).

This petite storybook ended as the night ushered in stars and a periwinkle sky. This book was comforting and simply delightful. No doubt this book would be a great stocking stuffer or part of a baby shower gift. Thank you, God, for Blessing Me is a blessing. Thank you, Max Lucado, for blessing me once again with your gift of writing and your sharing Little Hermie's gratitude in a big way!

The PhotoFacials Sun Damage Reversal System:

The PhotoFacials Sun Damage Reversal System:

  • Daily Exfoliating Cleanser (2 oz)
  • Day Moisturizer with SPF50 (1 oz)
  • Night Moisturizer (1 oz)

  • I reviewed this product as a "kit" using each of the above products according to the directions. Each product clearly had it's own unique properties. Here is my review of each:

Step 1: The Daily Exfoliating Cleanser had a nice clean scent and was easy to get a lather as I used it with a sea sponge. I made sure to rinse it off completely. If you do not place your face under running water it is a bit difficult to get all of the lather off. My skin was not dry after using, but I did use Step 2 (Day Moisturizer with SPF 50) just before my face fully dried.

Step 2: I learned very quickly that this product while sporting an amazingly high SPF Factor for day - was not a product that I could apply right onto my skin and wear through my day. First of all, the moisturizer left a whitish, greasy look on my face. I do believe adding less of it to a tinted moisturizer or base foundation would be a great idea. I appreciated the sun protection but not the heavy look and feel of the product. I do not recommend this product as a stand alone but definitely as a product in conjunction with another.

Step 3: Night Moisturizer was my favorite product by far. It smelled so fresh and was light on my face. In the morning, I would not have known I had applied it. Step 3 was the most successful step of my foray with PhotoFacials Sun Damage Reversal System.

Appearance-wise I cannot honestly say I see any marked improvement in my skin. It has only been two weeks of me using the products. The manufacturer states improvement can be seen in four weeks of using Kinerase.

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip and Perioral Anti-Aging

This product does what it claims to do - and in a very short time!! I used this pleasant scented, non-greasy creme twice a day for three days straight. The very first time I applied it, I felt it tightening my upper lip. I also saw vertical cracks on my lip line that I had not previously noticed.

Seemed the product tightened, then filled in (as another reviewer described) the crevices and tiny cracks in my skin. I did not notice an improvement in the sun damage and dark shading on my face but I am confident continued use of Dermelect will satisfy that claim as well.

I would buy this product and make it part of my beauty regime. There is no need to continue searching for an anti-aging, sun damage reversal lip creme. I do believe this product will fit the bill!!

Burberry Body: the New Fragrance for Women

Yes! I chose to "Like" this product so that I could receive a free vial of this perfume! You can get yours too (really and honestly it is not a gimmick!) by going toBurberry's Facebook page and Liking them. The link is https://www.facebook.com/burberry.

I was quite impressed to receive this perfume in a box with a pretty notecard sized linen-finished postcard announcing it's arrival. I did visit their website and though the model in the sepia colored "Advert" video advertised the perfume, she was also advertising her beautiful physique (albeit tastefully).

While I would not leave the postcard which was included in my free perfume box laying around for my husband to see (the beautiful blonde from the Advert in the flesh-colored trench coat is on the reverse side of the postcard), I would recommend you go to their Facebook page and get a free sample of this high-end perfume for yourself. Dab it anywhere you dare. It is downright scrumptious and enjoyable to say the least.

Sorry to say, I twisted off the top of the glass vial and was met with a metal spring and when I pushed the black plastic lid down, the perfume squirted right into my left eye (I am okay really). However,  I wore the perfume the night I got it and loved every second of it!

I am going to wear it tomorrow nite to date night with my husband. No matter that we are attending a Publix Apron's Italian Wine & Dinner demonstration, my Burberry will no doubt rise above the garlic and get the attention of my always visually and scent-driven husband. I will not be in a trench coat but a white apron and look and smell beautiful!

Get yours today - no need for the trench coat. The perfume speaks for itself! And what girl doesn't want to try free perfume? None I know. This offer is for real. Get yours today.

Green Apple Peel - Sensitive by Juice Beauty

Scent was first and foremost as I slathered this green apple peel for sensitive skin on my face and neck. The cast of characters in the ingredient list were: Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C, SPF, Vitamin E, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Essential Oils. As if the ingredient list didn't impress enough, this facial mask was formulated with a blend of glycolic acid (from sugar cane), citric acid (from lemon), malic acid (from apple juice), lactic acid (from milk extract) and tartaric acid (from white grape juice).

Add to that, Juice Beauty's Green Apple Peel - Sensitive was made from 100% organically grown products, Paraben free and a PETA product.

This product smelled great, was non-intimidating in the manner in which it was made to be applied it - with my fingers. I did make sure I applied a generous layer as the directions stated. I also waited the full 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water and a sea sponge that I always use for rinsing my face. I did not experience a tingling sensation as the directions mentioned may happen in those 10 minutes prior to rinsing. I did, however, see a slightly red patch of skin on the left side of my temple that I noticed for the first time as I rinsed my face. It disappeared soon after.

No doubt the tone of my skin increased. My skin had a healthier sheen even before I added my usual day moisturizer.  I have to say the exfoliation value in this product was amazing, considering how gently it treated my skin. I have to believe the power and the punch in this product was the Alpha Hydroxy Acid complex.

The power of fruit in a product is truly refreshing to see! Okay so an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a Green Apple Peel - Sensitive application by Juice Beauty once a week no doubt will keep the dry lines, dull skin and aged appearance away. Convenient size, great value for the price and so very natural. Met my "If you can't eat it, don't use it" test. I'm sold!

IB Revitalizer Overnight Oil Treatment Spray by Jonathan Product

Sometimes a product comes along that leaves me speechless (does not happen often!). This was one such product that I struggled with to give proper homage to the product and its creator. Therefore, I decided to break out an acronym and let the words speak for themselves. Here goes...

    Super great idea
Probably need to sleep in a shower cap while this amazing product does its magic
Extra curly and full of body after washing the next day
    Created with a great fragrance
    I love this product!!!
A must-have for any beauty arsenal
Love the convenience and uniqueness of conditioning hair while getting my zzz's

I did not have the IB Purifier on hand for this review. However, I washed my hair in the kitchen sink with baby shampoo and warm water. I applied an inexpensive conditioner and waited a few minutes before I rinsed out then towel dried. I let my hair air dry (I always do) and voila! I was looking at curly, shiny hair within the hour. I also noticed a drastic improvement with less frizz.

I am looking forward to experimenting with additional hair products immediately after using the IB Revitalizer and then styling with a blow dryer to see how straight hair will look after using this product.

Important: This product is for those with dull,color-treated or fine hair. I qualified in all three categories. The directions state to use twice weekly for four weeks, then 2-3 a month for continuous results (which I plan on doing).

This product smelled great, worked amazing, and was fun to apply and sleep with (in my hair). It will be one of those loyal "go to" products in my hair arsenal. I felt pampered, my hair felt pampered and the entire experience was successful and fun! I am still speechless....

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas

How blessed was I to have the chance to review this anointed work by author Eric Metaxas!  The New York Times best-selling author of Amazing Grace has once again delivered a book that helps one better understand how evil can take hold of a nation yet how one person can stand up for righteousness. I am a passionate student of everything Bonhoeffer. I digested this 544 page book in quick order.

One cannot read this book without also reading the Foreword by Timothy J. Keller and the Prologue which introduced the context of WWII as it related to those loved and best knew Dietrich Bonhoeffer. As the subtitled Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy so aptly gave this man several hats, the Prologue segues the reader into a well laid foundation for Dietrich Bonhoeffer the child into the man with all of the hats the subtitle awarded him.

I found it fascinating that Dietrich's mother home schooled her children and had a liberal slant in regard to faith. Dietrich grew into a faithful follower of Jesus Christ after his travels brought him to realize who God was and how the face of evil belonged to the enemy of God.

A nice touch were the photos in two sections of the book. There were several photos of Adolph Hitler and the Holocaust Museum. A copy of his handwritten poem Who Am I was also included. Here is a link to it. It is too special not to share in this review. Hear it below with text.

The biggest takeaway for me after I digested Bonhoeffer was my increased ability to relate to him. Clearly, his love for God allowed me to understand his passion to fight evil at all costs. He loved God and sought to serve Him and only Him. He became a martyr because he did not back down in the face of evil. This book inspired me to keep serving God despite persecution on a small or very large scale.

    Instant Radiance Moisturiser by Decleor

Oranges. Vitamin C. Figs. I couldn't wait to review this product! It exuded a healthy and yumminess - almost tasty enough to eat for breakfast! Even though it was labeled as "instant" I gave this moisturiser a full five day test drive. I watched the instructional video to the left and applied a pearl size amount on my neck and face in the morning and at night. True to it's claim, you can wear this moisturiser under your makeup without it feeling greasy.

Because of the vitamins and antioxidants (and bright and happy yellow tube) I knew my skin was receiving a treat. Because I am in the sun often, this would be the perfect accompaniment for me to throw into my beach bag and apply before I apply sunscreen. I have found after being in the sun and wearing sunscreen my skin becomes tan but greasy and dry at the same time. Instant radiance moisturiser would solve both of those problems at one time.

I often make a homemade citrus scrub with olive oil, lemon juice or extract and salt. Instant Radiance Moisturiser by Decleor smells just like my homemade concoction! The fruit extracts are wonderful and so much more convenient than me having to "whip up" a batch of my own recipe. I look forward to reviewing more of Decleor's products. I am encouraged because of the natural elements (free radical protection and PETA product as well!).

Loved the back-to-basics philosophy of this product. This product falls in line with my philosophy as well, "If you can't eat it, you shouldn't use it!" I would buy it! Don't just take my opinion as Gospel tho - check out Dr. Craig's review of Decleor http://www.dermstore.com/reviews/details_Decleor_5835.htm for yourself.
